On Saturday, October 5th a group of seven 20 somethings, including myself, packed a picnic basket and took a drive from Orange County, California to Temecula Valley aka Wine Country for a birthday celebration.

A first-time experience for many of the ladies, the visit started with fellowship and a few bottles of Almond Sparkling Wine and snacks followed by a photo tour of the vineyards and a trip to the bar for more sips. With a preference for the sweeter things in life, I stuck to sparkling wines and listed my favorite options below in order of preference.

  1. Peach Bellini

  2. Pina Colada including: Coconut Nui + Tahitian Vanilla + White Cabernet Sauvignon

  3. Sangria

  4. Almond

  5. Rose

  6. Watermelon

After tasting it was time for a meal, which we opted to have onsite at the Creekside Grille. The Creekside Burger and Jidori Chicken Wings were group favorites.

After having a meal, several laughs and candid conversation we headed back to Orange County filled with discounted bottles for later and memories to last a lifetime. It was a great experience, and a visit I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in exploring a winery in Southern California.

From the patio and restaurant to the tasting room, the service was fantastic. If you decide to take a trip look out for Mike and Jaron. They were awesome. Here’s a few tips before you go.

Prepare for the dust.

Save the carwash for post tour. The parking lot and vineyards are pretty dusty. I was very pleased with my decision to wear booties vs. open-toed sandals. No matter what shoes you choose, be sure they are comfortable. You may be standing at the tasting room bar, and of course you want to be able to listen to the tour guide instead of thinking about how much time is left before you can rest your feet.

Beat the crowd.

Because we went on Saturday when most people want to escape from the stresses and worries of the week, the more time passed, the more crowded the tasting room became. I would highly recommend arriving by noon at latest to avoid the later crowds and have more time to enjoy the winery before closing or potential private events.

Fuel the fun.

When good friends gather with a good glass of wine, fun is bound to happen. Be sure to eat more than a few snacks before you start tasting and be sure you’re hydrated. You will be happy you did the next day.

As if the tasty wine and great customer service weren’t enough, the following added perks will make your visit to Wilson Creek more worthwhile.

Shuttle service

Although my booties were a great choice for the festivities, the shuttle service saved me and my friends steps and helped us get the party started sooner.

Familial Feels

The warmth and hospitable atmosphere of the winery makes you feel right at home. With Wilson family roots, the winery started in 1996 and is still family-owned and operated. In addition to the Wilsons, the Wilson Creek community which spans beyond Southern California is recognized as the Wilson Creek extended family. The winery often supports charitable causes. While we were visiting during the anniversary of the tragic shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, a portion of proceeds from select bottles was being dedicated to support victims and their families.

Military support

With appreciation for those who courageously serve our country, the winery offers a military discount, which was more funds that could be added to the bottles purchased to go.

If you opt for the tour package, complete with five tastings, a complimentary wine glasses and 10% discount on purchases made the day of the tour, expect to spend two-three hours at Wilson Creek, at minimum. With plenty of space to spend time in fresh air with your favorite read, enjoy live entertainment or share quality time with your family and/or friends, the time will fly and you’re sure to leave satisfied.
